I love books! I love reading them and recycling old ones into adorable little things. When I craft with books, it is hard at first knowing you are cutting up a piece of art, but the end product makes it worth it. My first book project was a book clutch (tutorial here). This was the most complex book project I have done so far. Then I made a book clock (tutorial here)!! Now here is my book phone case. I first got the idea of course on Pinterest. It was just an image of a book covering a phone. This picture inspired me to make my version of the book phone case. This case is really cute and will trick anyone you are learning all about chess (in my case it will)!!
What You Will Need:
- Old book you can cut up/destroy!!
- Pencil
- X-ACTO Knife
- Ruler
- Device you are making the case for
- Scissors
- Sandpaper
- Mod Podge
- Paint Brush
- Wax Paper
- Heavy Items (I used soup cans)
Start off by tracing your device on the first page of the book. Use the ruler and add 1/2 cm to all four sides on your device. So my phone was 13cm by 6cm so the outline I made in my book was 14cm by 7cm centered.
Begin to cut out your outline in the book with the X-ACTO knife using a ruler as a guide and straight edge. When I got deeper into the book, I didn't need the ruler. I sometimes would use scissors to cut out the hole in the book. Cutting up 150 or so pages is time consuming and often frustrating but just be patient!! I cut all the way through to the end of the book, but you don't have to. Just make the depth of your hole big enough so that your phone fits and the cover can close.
After all the pages are cut, get out your sandpaper and begin to sand the raw edges you just cut. Also test to see if your device still fits. I had to sand a bit down because as I was cutting, my hole slowly got smaller so my phone just fit! Although I didn't sand too much as I liked the look of the uneven pages!!
Now get out your Mod Podge and paint the inside pages with a layer of Mod Podge. Also paint the back on the inside too.
Next get a piece of wax paper and place it between the front cover and the Mod Podged pages. This will allow you to open the front cover of the book after it's dry.
Close up the book. Mod Podge the outside edges so that they will be glued together. (Sorry the pictures a little blurry, opps!)
Then place your heavy items, like soup cans, on the book to keep it shut while the Mod Podge is drying. After it is done drying do a second coat to make sure all the pages are together. Don't forget your wax paper in between the front cover and pages even for the second coat. Once everything is dry, take out the wax paper and your case is ready.
Your phone has a new home! Now you can "read" with your new case and trick all your friends. Not only is this case a disguise, it is also a unique case for any phone. Just remember to put down your phone, or the book every once in a while and go have some fun this summer. ~farmgirl
